Perilous Ride for Cattle Fortunes in 1875 West
A 23 year old cowboy rode 100 plus miles from San Antonio with 25000 in gold to settle a cattle contract at Fort Mason. He and a brother faced possible ambush and the risk of losing both profits and credit as market prices rose. Willie Slaughter, later Col. W B Slaughter of San Antonio, led the quest while his partner J B aided. The Fort Mason buyout fight threatened $15000 in profit as cattle priced at 28 per head contrasted with 16 contracted.
