Final evaluation to reveal Salk vaccine in 217 areas

A large study on the polio vaccine given to about 1.8 million schoolchildren last year will be released in April. Houston was among the areas receiving the shots. If favorable and licensed, the National Polio Foundation will fund free vaccine through local health departments for first and second graders with parental consent. Administration details will be coordinated with school officials. The usual three-shot schedule covers two weeks. If licensed, vaccines would be available through drugstores and family doctors. Dr. Wiede notes the vaccine rarely causes a heavy polio case. The Eagle marks its 73rd year of service to the community and invites continued support.
