Steinmetz The Socialist Turned Electric Giant
Charles P Steinmetz, born in Germany and later an American icon, built a life from early exile to General Electric’s genius behind artificial lightning. He fled social turmoil, immigrated in 1889, and rose from Yonkers to Schenectady to dream of a electrified America with canals, steel roads, and train circuits, while battling a weak heart and a habit of smoking. He left an estate of about ten thousand dollars.
