Wildlife Wonders From The American Wildlife Institute
The Alaska brown bear on the Alaska peninsula is the world’s largest carnivorous animal. Grizzlies once dominated regions near black bears, with far wider distribution. Crickets sing by rubbing rough wings, not legs, with females hearing via foreleg ears. Beavers reach 68 pounds, a prehistoric 400 pound form exists in fossils, and many places in the US and Canada bear the beaver name. Rabbits rarely blink, Seton observed slow eyelid closures after minutes of watching. Muskrats, introduced in Europe, have multiplied fast enough to trigger quarantines, their waterproof fur oils aiding natural repellent.

Champion Woodsman Beavers Use Sharp Teeth As Tools
The beaver is described as nature s champion woodsman with self sharpening incisor teeth. Enamel on the front edges forms a hard chisel edge as dentine wears away, allowing efficient wood chipping. Beavers can fall trees over two feet in diameter and defend themselves when surprised or threatened.
