Sheep Sense Breeder Feeder Association Advice for New Farm Flocks

The article argues favorable wool market conditions favor starting a small farm flock. It recommends buying aged ewes for quick lambing and wool, noting open range buyers pay higher prices for younger stock. It emphasizes ample feed, water, fences, shelter, and careful transition from poor to good feed to encourage breeding.

Farm flock sheep profits and proper feeding tips

Farm flocks have increased in the Southwest. Ewes on good pasture may receive a small grain allowance to raise better lambs. Milk fed lambs born December to February reach market size by four to six months. On small grain pastures little hand fed grain is needed to keep ewes in condition. Lambs begin eating at two to four weeks with a creep feed available. The article notes age of ewes, protection from cold snaps, and advice for farm flocks versus range operations, urging county agents for guidance.
