D J Barton of Ft. Stockton was elected head coach to replace Bob Short. The 26 year old, a 1950 A and M graduate, played at Ft. Stockton High School and coached service ball at Hickam and in Honolulu before returning to lead the football program. A watermelon feed introduced the coach to players in City Park.
Schedule lists games for the Eden and Eldorado area with placeholders for open dates on Sept. 16 and Oct. 14. Opponents include Santa Anna Mason Frolksbe Peacock Menard Sonora and Eldorado with venues shown as Here There or Open. Requests for games on open dates appear.
James Arthur Sikes, a highway patrolman with the Department of Public Safety, is promoted to the Texas Ranger Service. Col. Homer Garrison announced the move, with Capt. Gully Cowsert of Company E as intermediary. The effective date was not confirmed, with Aug. 15 as a potential date and the replacement not yet announced.

In two days of the 112th District Court Judge Jim C. Langdon of Mc Camey impaneled a grand jury that returned three indictments for forgery and disposed of many cases without jury trials. One defendant pleaded guilty and received five years with probation under Adult Probation and Parole Act. A swindling with worthless check case was dismissed with restitution. another two penitentiary sentences were probated. Civil docket included divorces and custody, alimony set at 100 per month, property divisions, and an adoption and name change granted. several civil cases were dismissed or continued. Grand jury foreman was H. A. Brewster. (Continued on back page.)
Junction Natural Gas Co president Lynn H. Cockburn told City counsel Albert W. Searcy that construction of the natural gas transmission line from the south field to Junction will begin within days. Gas will reach the school campus first for cafeteria use by Sept. 15 with full service planned after August 15. Delays due to material shortages and engineering disputes are noted, and coated pipe will be used with in-house installation. An Houston engineer will supervise, supported by R. C. Riggs who will head the local office.
The 19th Annual Race Meet and Billie Sales kicks off with a parade in Junction. Lem Jones, president of the Hill Country Fair Association, says all stalls are full and more than 300 goats are entered in the sale as the three day event begins.
A talent show at the A&M Adjunct is set for Tuesday evening featuring 14 student entries plus acts by Dr. Uncle Ed Harrington and five girls. Bert Ormsby of Dallas will emcee at 8 p.m. with songs, dances, pantomime, and multiple duets and quartets led by regional performers.
