Nearly two hundred people including passengers and crew of the Ellerman line steamer Sardinia perished when the ship burned after leaving Liverpool for Alexandria. A strong wind fanned the flames as panic ensued with many drowning or suffocating aboard Grand Harbor. Rescue attempts failed due to heavy seas and gale conditions.
A gas main leak caused a blast in Gold Street Brooklyn scattering earth and debris over nearly a block. Fifteen workers were buried under soil and timber and ten others reported missing as rescue crews searched.

Due to exceptionally heavy rain in the last three weeks the Gatun dam crest has settled in spots. The dam designed to hold back the Chagres river waters has widened from fifty to three hundred feet. Settlement is expected from the embankment weight and cannot be prevented.

A robbery at Blunt State Bank early Wednesday saw two men force the cashier to open the vault and steal about $100 in currency. The cashier was locked in the vault but escaped after two hours. two suspects were arrested the next morning as authorities pursue the remaining gang members.
Reports say Rev. Frederick Loose pastor of the English Lutheran church at Yale was fatally shot in his home after returning during breakfast to break up his family. He shot his daughter and then killed himself according to dispatches.
