In Igheld Illinois on August 15 a mob lynched a negro after assaulting a white woman in her home. Five injured, multiple buildings burned as troops move to restore order. Governor Deneen and military leaders plan continued troop presence to curb violence.
Reports detail mob violence overwhelming the state militia in Springfield for hours. William Donegan was slashed and trampled before troops intervened. a boy was killed near Kanka and an unidentified white man reportedly shot at White City. Five deaths attributed to the mob as chaos waned.
Springfield mob violence escalates with J W Scott dying from a gunshot Friday night raising the death toll to six. H Bowe, a county clerk’s clerk, succumbs to blows and strains after a beating by the mob near the Black Belt area. Troops guard the city as patrols exchange fire and sections remain volatile through the weekend.
James 8 Sherman accepted the Republican nomination at a noon ceremony in Utica New York. The brief address pledged allegiance to Roosevelt era policies and asserted the people shall rule while contrasting with Bryan’s campaign slogan. Local leaders and college officials participated in the reception.
In Chicago at Music Hall E W Chafin was formally notified as the Prohibition party presidential candidate. Professor Charles Scanlon of Pittsburg delivered the notification address for the temperance committee of the Presbyterian church of America. Chafin then gave his acceptance speech outlining campaign policies for the fall. Prominent Prohibition figures from across the nation attended.
Major Beecher B. Ray of the U S Army received promotion to chief paymaster of the Dorset of the Lakes with headquarters in the federal building in Chicago, replacing W F Tucker on sick leave. Ray is noted as a key yet mysterious figure in Taft campaign activities and election operations.
Mrs. Ida Spooner, a widow in Poughkeepsie New York, gave four children morphine during a period of mental distress. One child died and two others are in serious condition. Mrs Spooner is hospitalized conscious but irrational.

Henry J. Duffy prepared three graves in Evergreen cemetery and had head stones erected for himself, his son, and his married daughter. He killed his two children with an axe, attempted to kill his wife, and later lay wounded in a hospital suffering from locomotor ataxia.
Manila August 18 The Merchants' association of Manila has started a campaign or invitation drive seeking to send an invitation to Roosevelt.
A movement within the association adopts a resolution urging President Roosevelt to visit the Philippine islands or Africa after the upcoming big game hunting trip. A committee is named to extend a formal invitation to the president.

St Petersburg faces a cholera threat after a surge in cases. Health officials report 210 deaths in the first five days of this week and 175 in the previous week. Authorities seek province arrival data to enforce quarantine and inspect food and water supplies in factory districts.

Wheat quotations from Minneapolis on August 18 show Sept at 1.00 and Dec at 0.98 plus May at 1.02. On track grain prices list No. 1 hard at 1.25 to 1.26, No. 1 Northern 1.23 to 1.24, No. 2 Northern 1.19 to 1.20, and No. 3 Northern 1.13 to 1.16.
St Paul market rundown lists cattle prices from good to choice steers six to six dollars and seventy five cents, hogs six eighteen to six fifty, sheep with wethers three seventy five to four ten and yearlings four to four fifty, spring lambs five fifty to six twenty five.
Wheat on track with prices for several grades: No. 1 hard at 1.21, No. 1 Northern at 1.20, new No. 1 Northern at 1.10, No. 2 Northern at 1.15, Sept at 1.00, Dec at 97. Flax on track at 13 14 per bushel.
Chicago market notes show August and September wheat contracts quoted around 2 and 9.4 cents with the December position near 98 percent. Corn futures list various December and May terms with percent bids and seasonal adjustments reflected in the 64 to 68 cent range.
Chicago Union Stock Yards notes cattle price ranges for August 18 including Reeves Texans western cattle stockers and feeders and calves with varied dollar amounts. Prices show wide spread across categories and types of cattle.
Completed compilations of railway figures for the state this year show a total of 7 152 miles with 501 miles of new mileage. The average assessment is 7 150 a mile, up 843 a mile from last year. The total railway assessment exceeds 28 000 000, up 6 500 000 from last year. The highest valuation is 9 878 a mile on the Illinois Central line into Sioux Falls.
Dr T H Hicks state veterinarian and Federal Inspector S M Smith placed Yankton and Clay counties under a thirty day quarantine after inspecting 37 farms in the region. Losses total 170 head of livestock with ravages higher than feared. Railroads have been told not to ship horses cattle sheep or hogs until the quarantine ends and no stock may leave the counties.
The new capitol project advances with both wings to be enclosed before year end. Contractor Olsen aims to finish interiors and central portions by spring while walls rise to the second story and reinforced concrete floors are laid. An accidental two ton chain drop tested a floor with no damage.

A large hail storm struck nine counties from Campbell to Codington including Walworth McPherson Edmunds and parts of Brown Faulk Spink and Clark. The storm mare rmaged fields with widths up to forty miles and losses ranging from twenty five to total. the hardest hit area was Ashton to the Clark county line where harvests delayed. Mound City in Pay County reports twenty five homes swept clean by hail.
Miss Lydia Mueller, living on her father's farm near Kulm, was injured when a rake dragged her. Authorities report the incident occurred on the farm property and she received treatment for abrasions and bruises.
A woman was thrown from a hay rake after striking a rock and became caught by the rake teeth. Her clothing was torn and she suffered severe bruises and cuts. She is expected to recover.
Rasmus Juul, son of John Juul of Irene, was operated on at Yankton by Dr. Rodgers to remove a two inch cigarette holder from his right lung. The object had been drawn into the lung while the boy played with it. The operation is described as unusual and the boy has a fair chance for recovery.
Emma F. Seaman won a divorce from Lloyd W. Seaman formerly of New York in a state circuit court at Sioux Falls. The decree cites intemperance and cruel treatment by the husband who allegedly threatened her life with a revolver.
Grimshaw postmaster at Deadwood and Lawrence county assessor urged a reduction in mineral land valuations in the Black Hills before the state assessment board. With several members absent, the remaining members declined to reopen the case, and the matter was tabled to be considered at a full board meeting later.
John Johnson, sh for M C Meeker near Manchester, was instantly killed by a lightning bolt while at work in the field. His clothing and bundles of grass transformed into a column of smoke as the bolt struck his head and ran down his body tearing the shoes from his feet.
Henry Fratzke a rancher, was killed while crossing railroad tracks on horseback in Interior. He was struck by a passenger train, mangled badly, and died shortly after at Chamberlain. He was 28, leaving a wife and three young children.

County auditors compiled the annual cost of running Lawrence County with a 26 000 population. Estimated total expenses exceed $190,006 for the year ending June 30 1903. Compliance with the state auditor’s request shows a compiled cost of approximately $114,000 for the last year.
Twenty guests at a Lans- Red hotel were poisoned after eating canned eyetables. The entire hotel was converted to a hospital as many guests fought for their lives and doctors worked through the night to save victims.
