A Kingman boy, six year old Siohn McCabe, is in the hospital after being struck in the head by a bat hurled during a Sunday game at Granda Ridge. The incident occurred when a player started toward first base and the bat struck the boy seated on a bench near the game.
The American Federation of Labor opens its second day in Denver with J H Thomas asserting England bears responsibility for the coal strike while Samuel Gompers and Eamonn De Valera clash over Ireland policy. Boland resolutions push for a three member labor commission and a boycott list of British goods in Federationist.
The Illinois Supreme Court denied a mandamus petition in the Wanderer death case. Chief Justice Stone noted that if sanity is in question, statutes require the trial court to impanel a jury to determine the defendant's mental state. Separately, a senatorial inquiry into labor disturbances near the coal fields was temporarily blocked by Senator Meyers who objected to Johnson's resolution.
The sheriff reports Loren Wilkes, a 14 year old girl, was found with a throat cut in a ditch near Autreyville at noon, evidently dead for hours. In other news, the Brotherhood of American Yeomen holds its sixth quadrennial conclave in Denver with 500 delegates from 33 states. The Washington cabinet debates consolidating administrative control of Alaskan affairs under a single executive head.
John G. Emery of Grand Rapids Michigan elected National Commander of the American Legion. Thomas Bannigan of Hartford Connecticut chosen as vice commander. Emery, a former vice commander, succeeds Frederick W. Galbraith who died in a car crash. Emery is a real estate broker born July 4 1882 and served in World War I with the 18th infantry.
Seniors sweep most events at the Dellwood field day with first place in almost all races and relays. Highlights include Higgins winning the 50 and 100 yard dashes, Harris and Flint leading in the high jump and bronco riding. Weather slowed times and shifted plans as the 800 yard shuttle relay and other events were omitted and a ball game was added for the afternoon.
Babe Ruth, the world’s home run king, hit two more homers against Detroit to set a new world record for two-homer games. He also extended his streak to five consecutive games with a homer in as many days and reached seven homers in five days. Peckinpaugh reached base each time Ruth connected, boosting his season total to 23 homers.
Washington June 14 The senate finance committee agreed to defer action on the soldiers' bonus bill until Monday to allow members more time to review changes since its House passage. It is expected the bill will be favorably reported to the Senate not later than Monday.
Two thirteen year old girls Sofie Zwoenice of 1304 Corn Street and Pauline Deslows of 71607 Elizabeth Street have been reported missing from their homes. The note says they were last seen at 3 p m Sunday. Sofie is about five feet two inches tall with light hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing unspecified clothing.
Roy O. Stoops retiring Joliet Public schools superintendent will return home at 108 Buell avenue to find a mahogany chair and black walnut lamp from teachers and elementary staff. A note on the chair expresses esteem. Stoops will study at Columbia University for a year and reside in Bancroft Hall with his family.
Disabled Soldiers baseball team from Mooseheart, joined by the Aurora Junior Order of Moose, will play next Sunday at Electric Park in Plainfield. The team, possibly the nation’s only disabled soldiers squad, trains in Mooseheart. Pitcher Chief White Feather, a full blood Winnebago Indian, previously played for an Omaha Indian team and with D Company of the 128th Regiment. Joliet players include Leonard A. Lyons and Henry Kase with multiple prior teams. Howard McMahon and Frank Tonascak also noted for service and play.
Jaconda Denardo and her sister Julia, both youths from Webster Street, were released on probation after a Boston Store hat and silk item were stolen. Chief Corcoran delivered a lengthy lecture on the evils of stealing, noting the girls’ custody and charges faced.
Joliet Association of Commerce directors voiced opposition to the State Tax Commission bill at a special meeting. They telegraphed Senator Richard J. Barr regrets he voted for it and urged Joliet’s three house members to defeat it. The bill would enlarge the commission’s authority, allowing state assessments and a Springfield court of appeals, plus potential general revaluations.
Police report a man on Richards Street between TV and Fourth avenues was told to start his car but could not due to heavy moonshine odor. Officer Balboni found the owner seated on the curb, unable to recall his name.
E M Walker, recently re elected head of the Association of Commerce, resigned late yesterday due to press of business. Fred M Chamberlin becomes interim president while James V Clyne of Commercial Trust and Savings Bank is named treasurer. The bank was named depository for the association funds. Calumet Baking Powder Co added as member through U C Young, plant manager.
URBANA, ILL June 18 Valedictorian honors in the University of Illinois class to be graduated Wednesday were won by 8 P. Lanmann of Havana. M. V. Raines of Urbana is the class salutatorian.
Work will start soon to create a dedicated parking area at Michigan Beach to ease car parking and keep the highway clear. The plan includes a separate lot with a probable guard to deter auto theft and protect gas buggies.
Joliet and Aurora Country clubs schedule a Wednesday afternoon golf tournament here. E A Dinet, sports committee chairman, announces a trophy awaits the winner and notes Aurora golfers held it last year. Alan will follow the tournament.

Deputies force entry to John Edwards s residence after dog defends slain master. Edwards 72 year old recluse on 19 acre farm three miles west of Naperville was murdered and robbed. Rifle used. Clerk Joe Petsch watched two youths, John Dockendorf and Woden Erickson, ages 14 and 15, pilfer from a Robert Meers hardware show case. Each boy carried a concealed automatic pistol, flashlight, and cartridges. Dockendorf had a 22 caliber weapon and Woden a 32 caliber. They were taken to the police station, parents notified, and the case moved toward trial.
Fort Worth reports masked men attempted a Texas and Pacific train hold up. Conductor Michael Tighe was fatally shot, per early dispatches. Other items include flood deaths in Oklahoma and political notes from Washington and Dublin.
Standard Oil headquarters in Pittsburgh announces a price cut of crude oil at the well by 25 cents per barrel on the six best grades. New prices list Pennsylvania 2.75, Carning 1.65, Cabell 1.56, Somerset heavy 1.35, Somerset light 1.55, Ragland 1.00. The Pennsylvania crude today marks the lowest since 1916, with prior high 2.75 and low 2.26.
Police raid at 1105 Scott Street led by Captain Fornango and Sergeant Beck ended with four Black suspects detained and three and a half gallons of moonshine seized. Lee Steel, William Simpson, Joseph Sanders, and Sam Wallace faced charges. Wallace drew a pistol but was overpowered. Simpson received 60 days for vagrancy. Steel, Wallace, and Sanders fined. Hogan Laverne sought as the whisky seller.
The Rev T F Quinn, pastor of St Marys church for five years, is transferred to St Sylvester’s Chicago and will assume duties June 25. He will be replaced by Rev James Griffin, pastor of Assumption church Coal City, who begins here next week.
A continuance in the hearing before Justice F. M. Hawk tomorrow for Ernest Hettman, charged with the murder of Joseph Weaver, was predicted today. The inquest was postponed pending an expected confession, though Hettman maintains he did not participate in the crime that killed the aged farm hand.
Joliet Lions Club hosts Miss Jessie Ackermann speaker at tomorrow noon meeting. Ackermann, famed traveler with eight world trips, is the only woman to use the postnominal F.R.S.G.S. after her name, a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. Delegates from the District Lions Convention will also report. Joliet Den’s cup won by the famous quartet will be exhibited.
Chicago June 14 Edward Geirun the private chauffeur named “Big Tim” Murphy labor leader Vincenzo Cosmano and others as planners and directors of a $380000 street mail robbery. Geirun said Murphy and Cosmano directed the plot and execution. both are under arrest with another suspect identified as a Polk Street bandit.
