Employes of Public Service Company of Northern Illinois gathered for their annual picnic at Seil's Grove, south of Troy. Attendees traveled by Public Service trucks and private conveyances, enjoyed a bountiful dinner, then competed in numerous athletic events. Team pinneo won the ball game 7 to 6. prizes included races for boys and girls, tug of war, and various footraces.
The Chicago YMCA has opened a camp for boys near the mouth of the Nankakee seven miles from Minooka. About 100 boys attend in divisions every two weeks with sessions lasting through the day.
Three young women remain in St Joseph's hospital after a crash at Ruby and Hickory streets. William Szymczak faces speeding charges after his car struck Gilbert Bolton's Ford, flipping it and injuring passengers in both vehicles. Bolton and a few others sustained minor injuries while several in the Szymczak car were uninjured. police note Szymczak had earlier accidents and a motorcycle struck his ditched car. Magistrate Nicholson continued the case until August 3.
Wagner and Himbert Bus Line applies to operate between La Salle and Starved Rock. The company was ordered to obtain public liability insurance of 50,000 before a certificate is granted.
Sid Hatfield and Ea Chambers, defendants in the Matewan battle murder case, were killed in Williamson W Va just before noon by C E Lively. Hatfield had faced charges for the Mohawk W Va uprising. Lively fired first injuring Hatfield who attempted to shoot Lively but failed.
At the Knights of Columbus international convention in San Francisco 800000 members and families launched a nationwide anti tuberculosis drive. Dr EB Buckley, supreme physician, leads a campaign to fund beds in sanitariums and aid consumptives, backed by state and local councils.

Joliet High School band comprising fifty members arrived by special boat at Camp Roosevelt near Muskegon Michigan for a two week outing and training. The band forms a company in the local ROTC. With the typhoid scare over parents are assured there is no danger of illness and the youngsters expect two weeks of pleasure.

William Dickman and James Kelly convicts from Cook County who were reported missing at roll call Thursday night were found this afternoon in a barn. They had concealed themselves and cached provisions while serving one to fifteen year sentences for robbery. Work at the new penitentiary was halted and the convicts were locked in their cells during the search.

Police and fire officials investigate an apparent Sunday night arson attempt at The Eagle Store on North Chicago Street. A short stocky man in light clothing smashed a window and tossed flaming waste inside, then fled through an alley toward a waiting car on Scott Street. No motive is known and the suspect remains at large. Local residents reported the incident after hearing glass breakage and seeing burning paper.
Catherine Peterson, age 84, died today marking the 84th anniversary of her birth. Survived by two daughters Mrs. Hyrup of Chebanse and Mrs. Yorum. Funeral from her residence Tuesday at 8 p.m. Body to Chebanse Wednesday morning for burial in the family lot.
Patrolman William Kwasniewski faces a hearing before Commissioner of Public Safety William Hennessy over charges by Harry Yudin owner of Lincoln Highway Dry Goods Store at 415 Cass Street. Yudin says the officer exceeded authority and struck him in the face after not moving a box from the sidewalk quickly enough during the Friday night arrest.
