Tragic Canal Disaster Near Joliet Claims Five Mules and Driver
A powerful storm near Joliet on Sunday morning at 5:30 o'clock caused a fatal accident on the canal near La Salle to Chicago. Thomas Ash, owner and driver, towed the Mayflower with five mules. lightning struck as Captain Thomas Barnes stood aboard, killing Ash and the animals. The body was moved to Joliet and later to Chicago for burial. an inquest found two small marks on the forehead as the only visible injuries. Ash had fifteen years as a canal driver and left a widowed mother in Chicago. The incident sparked public interest and led to an inquest and multiple local notices about ongoing Joliet developments.

Severe Sunday Storm Kills Man and Mules in Lightning Event
Early Sunday morning a severe storm struck with thunder and lightning. Thomas Ash and his five mules were killed. A Sullivan cow was struck dead, a tree near a house fell, and two young ladies were tossed from bed by the shock. Two houses reportedly struck suffered partial damage. A horse was killed in Mr. Woodworths barn on Eastern avenue.

Lightning destroys Frankfort Railroad Station at night
Sunday night around 11 o'clock a lightning strike shattered the Frankfort Railroad Station. The telegraph operator at the table was stunned and unconscious briefly but escaped before the blaze. Only baggage in the baggage room survived. An adjacent telegraph office also heard a burst like a percussion cap as a thunderstorm raged.
