Bear Treed by Cattle Transforms Santa Rosa Scene

Between 8 and 9 o clock Edward Defoe spotted a commotion at Joe Button's in Santa Rosa. A large brown bear perched in an oak tree near the railroad. the animal then left the tree and roamed toward Ware's, drawing a chase by Defoe and Frank Roberts who finally killed it with a buckshot that pierced the heart. The bear weighed nearly 200 pounds dressed and likely wandered from the hills between Bennett and Santa Rosa Valleys.
