DOT to replace U S 301 bridge over Neuse River
The North Carolina Department of Transportation will replace the U S 301 bridge south of Smithfield over the Neuse River. A 9.4 million dollar contract was awarded, and construction will take about three years while keeping the highway open. Two new west side lanes will be built and traffic shifted to them before removing the old structure. The new bridge will carry one lane each way with a middle turn lane. Work could begin as early as May.
