Council split over downtown social district vote

In Smithfield three councilmen were absent as a 4-0 vote authorized open-carry alcohol downtown a move opposed by opponents who say the issue was added without full debate. West Smithfield’s David Barbour questioned the process and urged delay for minority views.

Tragedy at SSS: Wade Swain dies in NC crash

Wade Swain 17 of Clayton died after a single vehicle wreck Aug 2 near Macon in Warren County. Classmates Alex Earnest and Kevin Chen were injured while Swain’s death and leadership left a mark on Smithfield-Selma High School and the Johnston County Board of Education noted his IB program role, baseball captaincy, and future plans at Wingate University. The community honored him Aug 13 with tributes on the baseball field.

Farmers scramble to salvage tobacco in Johnston County

Bryant Spivey of Johnston County Cooperative Extension Office warns Debby storm and prior heavy rain drowned tobacco plants in the county. He notes roots suffocate in waterlogged soils causing wilting and leaves to flop. Well drained fields fared better amid uneven damage. See page 5 for drought aftermath.

Pickleball grows in popularity among Johnston residents

Margaret Barbee, 80, of Clayton and Robert Wilts, 80, of Selma describe pickleball as easy to learn and adaptable for all ages. The daily Richard B. Harrison Gym group in Selma drew them in after pandemic closures, with tennis experience easing the switch and social competition boosting appeal.
