The Democratic county committee endorses a broad slate for the upcoming primaries, listing candidates for Congress, State Senate, County Clerk, Assembly, and numerous ward and town positions. Mayor Edward Kenny opposes Hudapeth and petitioners face a crowded field as party organization stays neutral in committee elections.
The Hudson Grove Democratic Club reformed Saturday at Gantzberg's Hall Leonard Street and Central Avenue with John Boisson as call to order. New officers were elected Jus Mulligan president Win Brandl first vice president Jan 8 Nolan second vice president Chas Blair third vice president Henry Rohrmedes treasurer Thor Coyle secretary Geo Feinen Jr sergeant at arms Maurice Connors. Members enrolled include James Nolan John Blohm J Boldt Charles Blohm Henry Schmedes Leonard Feinen James Mulligan Thomas Coyle David Carr Peter Gans Henry Ficken John Craig James Craig Mauries Connors Richard Banlach William Mathe John Boisson William Brandt Louis Albrecht Owen Nolan T McGinnis Andy Steindecker Henry Schroeder Herman Winters Leo Feinen Sr Henry Boldt Charles Bell Frank Petey Henry Petay Emil Roberts Everett Koerner F Gantzberg Jrmil Gantzberg Michael Beck Henry Richmond J Pitzpatrick Thos Glynn Joseph Gartier H Becker. After adjournment refreshments and songs followed and a new headquarters at No 4 Gregory Street will be used after the first of next month.
Third District Democrats in New Brunswick nominated James J. Bergen of Somerville, former Assembly Speaker, as their congressional candidate. Bergen's name was the sole nomination, with Homer Spragut of New York addressing the convention. The platform backs Bryan and the national program, with explicit denunciations of imperialism trusts and McKinley. A Bryan and Stevenson banner event with fireworks and speeches follows in the Fifth Ward.
The Extentive Committee of the Republican Committee will meet this week to plan primaries and a county convention. The primaries aim to elect telemites to the convention, where Freeholders, a Conureen mi and a Senator are to be nominated. Chairman Fry will call the meeting.
A report from Washington states Thome Mulvey son of Michael Mulvey of 424 Princeton Avenue was killed in Luzon Philippines while serving with Company L Fifteenth Infantry. Mulvey enlisted November 24 1888 and died near Mavitan Laguna. Sergeant Evremond DeHart son of Charles A DeHart and Everett Matlack were also affected in the same engagement with Filipinos.
The Lambert Hoisting Engine Company Guards held their annual target excursion at Greenville Schuetzen Park on Saturday afternoon. Seventy seven members attended, arriving by two chartered cars from Newark. Breakfast, rifle range contests, and a 4 1 2 p.m. dinner followed by impromptu races marked the day. Captain John Buchmier led the company with Henry Retzel overseeing arrangements.
Counsellor W H Speer Sr obtained from Vice Chancellor Stevens an order requiring Samuel Kane Jr to show cause why he should not be attached for contempt of court for disobeying a court order. Grace Kane filed for divorce on desertion and non support. The Vice Chancellor previously ordered Kane to pay $10 counsel fee, weekly alimony, and motion costs. Speer stated Kane had not complied and owed his wife, and may have discharged his counsel and left for unknown places.
Keramig Art Club returned with a medal and diploma from the Tri State Fair exhibition praising the strong display. The show featured three glass casts including plaques for Mrs Brownie, plus collections of punch bowls steins and smaller ceramic pieces. The club, with twenty eight members, plans a fall program starting October featuring lectures by Miss Horlocker and Miss Humble, with future months arranged around plant forms landscapes and holly designs. A public exhibition is likely around Christmas or Easter at the president Mrs Charles Brownne’s home.
A new Gothic memorial window at St John s Protestant Episcopal Church Summit avenue honors Mr and Mrs William Underhill. Erected by their children, the window depicts a meadow scene in rich color by Milany. Mr Underhill long served the church, Mrs Underhill taught Sunday school, and the bulletin notes his refined Christian counsel and lasting memory.

The Happy Home Social Club met Saturday night at its quarters on Harrison and Monticello avenues and completed plans for the housewarming tonight. A delightful program has been arranged and there will be bowling for prizes totaling 25 dollars.
The George Paragan manslaughter case from Bayonne was postponed from this morning’s Court of Oyer and Terminer session to October 8 at the request of defense counsel ex-Judge Thomas F. Noohan.
The annual ball of Pohlmanns employes will be held this evening. The employes have been very courteous to all the patrons during the summer-night festival season and have made many friends who will doubtless attend their affair tonight.
Col. Tean has been invited to give a Humber of Speeches under the Democratic State Committee. He spoke in Anglewood Saturday night. John Jansen of 174 Pine was held for the Grand Jury by Police Justice Hoos in the First Criminal Court after being accused of fatally shooting tailor John Sandin of 102 Railroad Ave last Wednesday night. The case edges toward indictment as authorities prepare for further proceedings.
Dr. McGill denies the circulating rumor that the city intends to appoint someone as President of the Board of Police Commissioners. The denial clarifies there is no truth to the claim as of Saturday night.
The Catholic club directors will meet this evening at the clubhouse despite rainy weather. Members plan to discuss upcoming events and fundraisers, with emphasis on community outreach and parish activities.
At the eight o'clock service at Saint Michael's Church Reverend Mather Shepard condemned saloonkeepers who sell beer to minors. He said he would ask the next child encountered with a beer can to name the seller and make an example of them.
Carl Wolke aged twelve of South Street and Cambridge avenue was struck by trolley No 173 of North Hudson County Railway Company on Cambridge avenue and Franklin street Saturday afternoon. He escaped with an injured face and was taken home by his father. Ten-year-old Joseph Connolly of 190 Eighth street had his right foot crushed by a Grove Street trolley at Second street Saturday night and was taken to St Francis Hospital.
A new Irish American Union branch named the Sons of Erin was formed north of the Erie tracks yesterday at Cronin's Hall 563 Henderson street. Officers elected included John W. Donegan president and Dennis M. Kelleher vice president. The group denounced McKinley Hanna and Chamberlain and urged defeating McKinley to avert Anglo American alliance. Meeting will be held weekly at Cronin's Hall with over 100 members, including Republicans, already pledged.
Hoboken Health Commissioner James Benson has been missing for a week. His wife has been ill for over a year and the family asks for quiet while authorities, including New York police, search for him. Benson is well regarded by Hoboken police and residents.
Vice Chancellor Stevens signed an order granting Laura Hermann custody of her five year old son Paul. Mrs Hermann, a New Yorker, sought divorce from Adam Hermann of this city after he forcibly took the boy last summer. He defended the habeas corpus case by challenging her fitness and accusing the child of swearing profanely. The judge ruled for the wife but ordered care to keep the boy off the streets and to curb his bad habits.
Hoboken’s Paragon Social Club hosted a successful ball at Pohlmann’s on Saturday night with a large crowd. Frederick Carter aged 40 of New Jersey Avenue died after drinking carbolic acid by mistake at his home yesterday afternoon. He was taken to City Hospital in agony where doctors failed to save him. Survived by wife and two children. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM when the poison was misread as cough medicine.
The National Brotherhood of St Andrew and Philip will assemble its bi annual convention at Clinton Avenue Reformed Church in Newark on November 14 and 15. The Germain Reformed Church committee prepared the program. Five sessions are planned with open sessions for the public and lodging options for about 100 delegates.
West Hoboken postmaster Charles Eichhorn sues George Klammann for 000 damages over alleged ballot stuffing at a West Hoboken primary. Circuit Court Judge Nevins grants a non suit after Klammann’s attorney renews the motion. Eichhorn, an organization man, and Klammann, a McEwan follower, aimed to expose Republican faction clashes.
At the Tri State Fair on Wednesday under Captain Cox special police work by ex Chief Callahan and Joseph McGrath led to the arrest of a man claiming to be William Jacobs for pickpocketing. A watch was recovered and later linked to George Walter of 6 Boulevard. Justice Blocher committed Jacobs for further examination, while Chief Murphy refused to surrender the watch on Jacobs's order, noting no one had appeared to claim it. Jacobs had been discharged by the Justice before.
Mary Murtha, seeking divorce from Thomas Murtha, obtained alimony and counsel fees in a morning application before Vice Chancellor Stevens. Counsellor James Manning represented the plaintiff. Murtha’s alleged abuse included a vicious January attack that left her leg broken and hospitalized. The vice chancellor awarded Mrs Murtha $ and counsel fees and alimony pending suit.
Reported discovery of a bloodstained shirt on Allside Avenue near Highth Street triggered a police inquiry. Detectives followed a line of clues that unsettled residents as they probed a suspected homicide yesterday morning.
The Committee of the Whole of the Board of Education will meet Wednesday afternoon before the Board of Finance to discuss crowded schools and seating for many pupils left out. Director Walter Birdaull says Finance Commissioner Ingle asked for input on a proposed addition, estimated at about 91.00 dollars, with some calling for a new building beside the old one, though opposition prefers a single structure. A Jersey City mayor thanks Pennkohe Vania Railroad, Adams Express, Dodds and Chileet Express, and other firms for free transportation of tools clothing food and supplies donated by public school children aiding Galveston disaster relief. Messages express gratitude and pride in community charity.
A benefit performance last evening under T. W. Dinkins raised over $900 for Galveston relief. Donations of clothing were requested to go to Mr Sol EL Dats, with cash gifts tallied at the Mayor's office from numerous benefactors and local firms. Collections will be taken in Newark Catholic churches next Sunday.
