Arbor Day activities planned across district schools with tree planting and appropriate exercises. Programs emphasize civic duty and environmental care, aiming to involve students in hands on activities and recognition of tree planting traditions.
Arbor Day was celebrated across city schools with new parks as central. School No 1 planted twenty six trees to form Linsley avenue in honor of Principal Linsley, who did not attend. Cadet corps from School No 8 led the dedication at Little Italy Park with Sousa Band music and student readings and recitals from Nos. 1 and 9.
School No II and No M1 marked Arbor Day with a morning prize for Miss Hattie Hekhoff for a Benjamin Franklin composition. In the afternoon, students performed pieces including The Whistle Tree and A Lover of Nature, interspersed with music, as several prominent citizens spoke.
In Public School No 12 Director Mul viney gave an address amid enthusiasm as classes formed protecting societies. The program featured essays songs and music with participants including Clarence Wilson Etta Smith Nelle Lewis Emma Chamberlain Mamie Leather Ray Snyder Flora Gibson and many others.
Many exercises of song and recitation were held in the building as the busy activities of various high societies occupied the season. This year they abandoned their usual Arbor Day programs, and the matter was deftly handled with the teachers. Much of the class conducted its own exercises in its classroom.
