Mrs Franklin Whitney chairwoman of the Town Improvement committee leads a Jersey City Woman's Club petition effort to rename City Park to Mary Benson Park. She and club members push a draft petition to City Hall, praising Mary Benson for securing the park and vowing to gather signatures to secure the change despite Board of Works resistance.
Interest grows in Labor Day park planting in Little Italy with the Cadet Corps leading ceremonies. The Woman's Club donated funds for trees, and city officials will participate in a parade from Mercer Street to the park.
Acting Clerk Tolson reports the Board of Street and Water Commissioners invites Woman's Club members to attend the opening of the new park at New Ark Avenue and Merseles Street next Monday at 2 PM. Tickets to Buffalo Niagara Falls and other resorts go on sale April 30 1901 for Pan American Exposition travel. May 1 1901 brings regular summer excursion tickets east of Pittsburgh and Buffalo. Tickets valid until October 31 1901 with Niagara Falls returns until November 30 1901. Summer excursion book to be issued June 1 1901.
A New York liner was ferried over the river to the foot of York Street yesterday afternoon for removal of stores in preparation for a voyage to Pritameyrhle to procure a new Khadr poe Le oe.
Vincent Prisco and Silyle Dalila are jailed on charges of conspiring to defraud Metropolitan Life Insurance. Detectives arrested them at their home after a multi day investigation. Both men confessed in police custody. Prisco arranged for a substitute to take a medical exam for a policy increase, prompted by illness. An English hesitant Dalila posed as Prisco in the exam. Maxwell, the agent, is no longer with the firm and faces no action.
Dr Henry L Hupfeld of Wee Hawken died leaving a handwritten will that names Gustav Hupfeld as heir with subsequent bequests to August Louise Elisa Hermann Anna Hupfeld and relatives. Witnesses’ signatures appeared after the fact and Judge Blair reserved decision on proper execution and interpretation of the provisions.
An impromptu concert was given to patients at Snake Hill asylum by invited ladies led by Freeholder James Illington. Attendees included Mia Billington Miley E Billington Mies Somers Maud Farrell Emily McNenney Hetherington Dougherty Director Holmes and Frechaiers Willington Kelly Caparn Kuper Nugent Nolan. A new piano purchased by the asylum committee was used as entertainers performed for convalescents, who enjoyed the Fire treat and welcomed relief from monotony.
The Board of Finance failed to sell the 900,000 tax arrearage bonds and 182,000 school bonds plus 207,000 funding bonds. Bids from Blake Brothers & Co and Brook & Co of New York were rejected. others from N W Harris & Co and Hurson Leach Co also failed to meet terms. Officials noted bidders faced a tight market, but the city still expects to dispose of the bonds at satisfactory prices. The city gained a premium on long term bonds and praised the sinking fund’s management.
A second unidentified drowning was found in the canal at Washington Street yesterday afternoon. The deceased, about five feet eight, wore a gray coat blue striped trousers and a black and white shirt with a knife, a comb, twenty seven cents and old letters in pockets. One letter was to Dora Williams of Hoboken and written by Valentine Williams, a Hudson County Jail prisoner. another by Martin Connors, also jailed, was found. Letters were said to have been passed to John Gallagher, a longshoreman, upon his release. Gallagher’s address could not be confirmed. Mrs. Williams of Hoboken denied knowing the man. Police suspect a falsified name was used.
Joseph G Devine of 226 Montice avenue veteran of the urban and Philippine wars applies for a police department appointment. He served with General Worth in the Santiago battle on July 1 1898 and was honorably mentioned in general orders. Willard Pink of McDermott and Fink urges the appointment.
A bold plan to abduct and smuggle dangerous criminals from the county jail was foiled by Sheriff Ruempler and Warren Sullivan. Key conspirators John Hilton and John Seton were arraigned and sentenced to seven years in state prison. A letter from Tellerwyne exposed outside accomplices including Columbo and Jules, with wives enlisting help to cut bars via outside aid, prompting court action and renewed security.
Warden Sullivan reported a suspected jail plot after Hilton and Seton planned to escape by sawing bars in a bath door window with outside help. Curious letters to wives and suspicious visitors heightened vigilance. Hilton and Seton faced court as maps of the plan emerged. Detectives pursued accomplices Columbo and Jules, with one suspect identified and questioned.
At a Finance Board meeting officials whose terms were extended by the Meeker act filed bond renewals. Names include Deputy City Treasurer William Jr and Deputy City Comptroller Stephen M. Egan with multiple sureties. A Garrison avenue asphalt petition was also heard, with majority ownership supporting paving. remaining owners to be heard. The matter was deferred to the next meeting on Wednesday, May 15.
President B P C Young and Vice President David Young of the Newark Plank Road Company visited the Passaic River site this afternoon to inspect the construction of the new bridge. The firm plans to push forward the project and open the road as soon as possible. Their offer to Freeholders to sell the bridges remains under consideration, with a potential agreement to be reached within a week involving Hudson and Essex authorities on the price.
A lamp exploded causing a small blaze in the third floor apartments of Jacob Sludzenowski at No 12 York Street. A citizen alarmed the Fire Department but Sludzenowski had already extinguished the fire by the time engines arrived. damage described as slight.

Chanceman Collins of the First precinct police arrested Walter Kilminiser, eighteen, of 46 Magnolia Street Newark, a driver for Initial Tower Company, at the corner of Cols and Fourth streets after the man allegedly drove over a twelve year old girl. The girl appeared uninjured and could not provide her name. Kilminiser was held for investigation.
