Indiana Governor James P. Goodrich proclaims Friday June 28 from noon to 10 PM for citizens to pledge or purchase War Savings Stamps in support of the national thrift drive and wartime financing. The War Savings Committee of Indiana will collect pledges and stamps through the five days ending June 78th and into the remainder of 1918.
Clark County exemption board sent questionnaires to fifty more registrants from the 197 men aged since the draft law began. It lists names of those to receive inquiries and notes additional men to Camp Sherman for selective service processing. Five men will go to Purdue University for training Friday morning.
Ex Private Billy Lee Howard will speak at the kK of P Armory Friday night in Indiana to tell the public the truth about life in trenches and at sea. The talk supports the War Savings campaign with a musical prelude and a program led by Homer M. Frank and James E. Burke.
May reports show committee activities including comfort kits shipments and garment distributions. Treasurer Mrs. George R. Clarke records on hand balances of 2542.14 on June 1 and 2914.51 on May 4, 1918, with donations and memberships noted.
Mrs Theresa Kerberg receives optimistic letters from sons John J. Kerberg of Company L 168th Infantry in France and Charles F Kerberg of Company Eighth at Fort Wadsworth New York. John reports growing warmth in France, ample food, cold nights requiring two blankets, and flowers from No Man s Land. He mentions eight days in the trenches and a long post‑dining cleanup after combat. Charles notes lights out at night with only searchlights sweeping the bay for a magnificent view.
Five men will depart for Valparaiso Indiana Monday for vocational service from a listed group. The names include Charles Homer Wells Floyd Petty William F E Porter Riley Edwards Maxwell Hossettler Harry Spelton and Charles H O Bryan.
W. B. Veasey received a postal board of greeting from Lawrence Capehart, a local boy with the 3rd Replacement battalion of the United States Marines serving in France with the American Expeditionary Forces.
Jeffersonville City Attorney Wilmer Fox files an objection with the Public Service Commission to Southern Telephone Company of Indiana for higher rates. The city contends the petition lacks facts on capital, operating costs, and revenue and that the company has earned an adequate return. A hearing is set for July 13. The city seeks a physical valuation and an audit of books including long distance charges, and asks the rate increase be denied.
The second draft drawing under the conscription law occurred in Washington with Secretary of War Baker blindfolded selecting numbers from a bowl. The session in the Senate office building produced numbers 246 110% and 818 as subsequent picks, with blackboards recording and photographing the entries for an official record.
A county wide plan mirrors the State Council of Defense with patriotic July 4 meetings in courthouse yards and township gatherings. Jeffersonville hosts one meeting, with invited officials and a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Other celebrations may occur in Borden Henryville New Washington and Charlestown.

Elizabeth Jane Bigelow 63 native of Ohio and longtime resident of 721 East Maple Street died at 10:20 AM at St Edward's Hospital New Albany after seven weeks of diabetes. Widow of David J Bigelow she leaves children Ella Twoomey Julia Beekman Frank Lewman Marguerite and David in the Army. Funeral plans pending church services at the Presbyterian Church.
