Washington announce war finance corporation will accept bank applications for four month loans to cover advances to farmers and merchants for harvesting and marketing wheat and other crops. Interest set at 6.5 percent per year.
Shipping Board chairman Hurtes announces plan to man revived merchant marine with wholly American crews. War needs drive the program while a foundation for a peacetime peace fleet is laid. Training ships will be stationed at New Orleans and Cleveland to train about 36 000 apprentices next year.
Representative Charles H. Randall of Los Angeles, a member of the house post office committee, secured authority to represent the committee in a France mail service investigation. He will sail for the front in a few days, bringing 15 years of mail service experience to seek causes of frequent mail complaints by American troops.
Albert G. Dahn of Columbus returned from Pittsburg where he attended a national Eagles meeting. He brought a 2260 star service flag with a gold cross of thirteen stars for the Indiana State Aerie, the only state aerie with a flag at the gathering. The flag was crafted by local women under Dahn’s supervision.
Ashtabula Ohio August Charles F Harmon former state representative mayor of Andover and president of Andover Bank was killed when his automobile turned turtle at Cherry Valley He was a candidate for nomination for state representative at the coming primaries.
John H. Fahey of Boston led a group forming the St. Johns River Shipbuilding Company to buy the Hillyer Sperring and Sunn wooden ship yard in South Jacksonville. The vessel yard, largest of its kind in the south, operates seven ship ways and had been run by the Shipping Board since the war.
Direct distribution of government wood is underway for depot employees. Most wood is being delivered to the employee quarters, with none sent to the county rear area where it was previously distributed.
Mrs Catherine Murphy longtime Jeffersonville resident died last night of senility. She had been living with the Sisters of Providence in Louisville. The body is at E M Coats Sons undertaking. funeral at St Augustine's Catholic church Friday at 9 a m. She leaves a son Richard Murphy residing in Watson County.

Rochester Indiana August 6 Army worms swept a corridor a mile from seven miles north of town and ruined 180 acres of oats across several farms with losses in the thousands. Poison bran bait mixed with arsenic by County Agent L R Binding stopped the infestation by scattering bait and plowing furrows to corral the pests. frost killed corn in the area.

The blaze damaged the single car while many other machines and much property were at risk, though damage was confined and negligible.
The Civil Service Commission announced an examination for assistant storekeeper at the government depot. Salary is $1,000 per year. Applications may be filed until August 31.
