River captains recall frigid Missouri crossing tale

A group of about a dozen well known river captains and pilots gathered recently when one, Captain Mac, described a Missouri River crossing that began with water so cold it froze the ice thick as window glass. He and Bob Grehan struggled in a skiff, pushing through ice until the boat was left behind and they fled across the frozen surface. The tale continues with a second memory of Jimmy Gilfilin and the narrator guiding a flock of sheep to safety as a north wind drove them to a fire where both sides froze, and the animals died frozen together the next morning.
