Governor commutes Goddard death sentence to life
May 9 1906 Little Rock Ark Gov John P Lee commuted the murder sentence of DT Goddard from hanging at De Queen Sevier county to life imprisonment after a petition by prominent Sevier citizens. Goddard killed Edward Ward at Gilliam last year and had been due to die July 28. James Metts, Sheriff’s posse member, was also killed during the manhunt but not charged in that case. Court actions began in 1905 with a verdict of murder in the first degree. The commutation prevents what would have been De Queen’s first execution. Houston meanwhile bought three and a quarter million brick for street paving.
