Jefferson Township County Convention Adopts Union Platform
The Jefferson Township convention at Coast House on Sept 22, 1860 elected I. E. Reece as chairman and H. Craufurd as secretary. Officers named include G. I. Walton township trustee, Elijah Anderson justice of the peace, and others. Resolutions endorsed the Republican platform and reconstruction amendments while pledging support to Union nominees. Mackenry’s Des Moines speech criticized tariff, debt, and Copperhead politics with sharp, caricatured rhetoric.
