A letter from Peoria, dated January 1808, urges the Iowa Legislature to establish a Normal School at Jefferson to serve the rapidly growing Northwest region. The writer argues teacher qualification, national education benefits, and the need for local institutions, urging public meetings and petitions to back Rippey and legislators.
Jan 46 Congress discusses authorization of a bridge by Southern Minnesota Railway Co at LaCrosse across the Mississippi. House and Senate clash over cotton tax repeal and import rules. defenses and deficits debated. Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad land grant contested amid British ownership concerns. Reconstruction bill postponed while partisan speeches on currency and greenbacks continue. Alaska purchase debate and legal tender issues feature in floor remarks.
The Senate and House convened with a pro tem secretary named, credentials elected, and committees formed. Leaders selected included Speaker pro tem Samuel McNutt and permanent House officers John Tawell, M. C. Woodruff, and Benjamin Van Steinburg. resolutions addressed soldiers orphans and chaplains, with reading of the Governor’s Message and preliminary canvass actions.
Samuel Merrill and John Scott take oaths in a ceremony with God and attendees. They pledge to support the U S and state constitutions and to faithfully discharge their duties. The Battle Hymn of the Republic is sung as Lieut. Governor Que introduces the inaugural address, which is read to attentive listeners. The House adjourns until 10:00 tomorrow after the State official departs.
