Grand Jury to Probe Bishop Cannon Campaign Finances
Washington Sept. 30 AP District Attorney Rover announced a DC grand jury will probe charges that Bishop James Cannon Jr. and Adam L. Burroughs former treasurer of the Virginia Anti-Smiths Committee violated corrupt practices laws in the 1928 presidential campaign. The inquiry begins Oct. 3 to decide if they failed to report campaign expenditures to the House clerk. witnesses, including bankers and Methodist Episcopal Church South officials, will be subpoenaed. Names of the Bishop and Burroughs are withheld to prevent delays as the statute of limitations nears. Secretary Hyde told European cotton groups that the Hoover administration opposed an export debenture on cotton.
