Bishop John M. Moore of Dallas urged renewal of faith and enthusiasm at the Missouri conference of the Methodist Episcopal church in Moberly. He warned that economic hardship strains preaching and called for a stout, enduring faith likened to Bessemer steel to keep its edge.
In St. Louis on September 28 AP reports Oscar Smart, 27, a farm hand, is in City hospital with a fractured jaw and severe bruises after two strangers asked for a match, learned his name, and assaulted him. Smart said one man asked his name and the other kicked him, then they fled.
Seven prisoners at the Oklahoma state penitentiary fled during the night by burrowing under the wall from the tubercular sanitarium. All were patients, with three described as very sick. Authorities said the fugitives, including J. P. Crowley and Charley Points, were picked up by a waiting car north of the prison, and Warden Sam Brown ordered the sanitarium torn down.
In St Louis on September 28 AP Don Matthews Republican nominee for state superintendent urged selecting the state superintendent by the board of education instead of popular election. He argued the school system should not be a political plaything and cited the Democratic primary showing Charles A. Lee winning 90 counties by 77,000 but losing the nomination.
Three state agencies review a report by Elizabeth Owens alleging physicians sold babies to cover hospital and doctor fees. Mothers unable to pay were steered toward adoptions with foster parents agreeing to settle the bills. The report cites California doctors profiting from infant care as investigations proceed.
The National Labor Relations Board found Ely and Walker Dry Goods Company guilty of violating the National Recovery Act by failing to bargain in good faith with Wholesale Mouse Workers Union Local No. 18 316 and by supporting a company union. The board ordered withdrawal of league funds ceasing solicitations recognizing the Wholesale House Workers Union Local No. 18316 as the executive bargaining agency and negotiating in good faith with the union. It also required public notices and nondiscrimination against employees who resign from the league.
Russell Sharp of El Dorado Kansas testified at a federal trade commission hearing that he planted a dictaphone at political meetings and shadowed an opposition speaker as a paid worker to help carry a Western Distributing franchise election in 1932. He said he was employed by Cities Service agent R S Meeker to participate in elections of interest to Roberty companies and described efforts to suppress opposing circulars and threaten a local editor.
Cleveland report says federal agents close in on Edward G Bremer kidnapers Fred Barker Arthur Barker and Alvin Karpis after a west side hideout revealed their guilt. Sixty four agents joined the pursuit in the city as authorities intensify the case in late September.
Mrs. George Braughtman aged 25 died at St Marys Hospital after a brief illness of peritonitis. The widow, formerly Miss Mary Margaret Elliot of Richmond Indiana, had come to the area recently with her husband, chief statistician and finance director for Wallace Crossley in the FERA. She is survived by her mother Mrs Elizabeth Eliot of St Louis and two sisters. The funeral will be held in Richmond.
District Attorney Samuel J Foley declares Hauptmann was the man who went up the ladder to the Lindbergh nursery on the night of the kidnapping. He contradicts federal experts who doubt Hauptmann could have climbed the ladder, insisting Hauptmann acted with others. The report also notes shifts in forbidden beverage trends in Germany.
Meeker and Burns era operatives testified they organized paid canvassing of El Dorado residents to oppose a franchise. Witness described planting a dictograph in opponents’ meetings and listening in on D W Pierce’s Socialist party telephone line, with others aiding opposition efforts.
Trustee J A Bachman announces a sale of section 6 township 42 range 42 exc 60 acres lying west of the Henley and Jefferson City road in Cole County Missouri to satisfy a promissory note. The sale is set for Monday October 29 1934 between 9 A M and 9 P M at the Jefferson City courthouse door.
