Coleman convicted of murder in Moberly tavern arson

Coleman, a 38 year old ex convict, was found guilty of first degree murder for returning to a Moberly tavern, pouring gasoline, and setting a fire that killed 12 people. The jury sentenced him to death. He plans to appeal.

Treasurer cuts phone service over unpaid bills in La Porte

La Porte County Treasurer Stanley Lauer says he cannot pay office phone bills and will cut telephone service today after the County Council refused a $220 appropriation. He has $17.65 left in the telephone fund and says the in person visit is required for tax talks.

Race car driver to give address at Missouri gathering

More than 30 representatives from the automotive aftermarket industry of Missouri will attend a three day convention at the Ramada Inn this weekend per Ben Sorin president of the Automotive Wholesalers Association. Featured speaker Rodger Ward the World renowned race car driver will address at a noon luncheon Saturday. Schaffner Wins Senate Approval As Revenue Director

James E. Schaffner was confirmed by the Missouri Senate on Wednesday as state director of revenue, succeeding Thomas A. David who became Highway Department administrator. Schaffner’s successor as state purchasing agent, Robert L. Norris of Hallsville, also won Senate approval. Gov. Warren E. Hearnes’ other Wednesday appointees included William Y. McCaskle, insurance superintendent. Jack N. Bundy, savings and loan supervisor. Gene Sally, Department of Community Affairs director. A. J. Anderson, Banking Board secretary. Dr. Frank B. Haugh Jr., Jackson County Sports Complex commissioner. Alex George, state athletic commissioner. Dr. Ralph A. Powell, Board of Chiropractic Examiners. and Walter Steinburk, serving on the Missouri-Illinois Jefferson-Monroe Bridge Commission.

Grocery owner killed as store hit 12th time

Seattle AP report states grocer Alfred Mathison aged about 61 or 62 was found stabbed under the chin in the doorway of his 12th robbed or attempted robbery store in 23 years. A paring knife lay near the emptied cash register as police investigated the fatal holdup.

Committee forms to launch local YMCA effort in Jefferson City

A 100 plus gathering at the Governor Hotel set in motion planning for a Jefferson City YMCA. A 27 member steering committee was elected to map programs, secure 500 family memberships and raise an initial 30 000 dollars with support from members business industry and a United Fund. Speakers urged strong local ownership and industrial backing for a viable family YMCA with programs emphasizing citizenship fitness leadership and faith.
