Pleasants to receive distinguished service cross for 1900 Tientsin heroism

Kansas City AP report recalls Sgt. John H. Pleasants who retrieved 1300 rounds under fire during the 1900 Tientsin siege. Brig Gen Horace Fuller at Fort Leavenworth will pin the Distinguished Service Cross tomorrow during the national veterans convention. Pleasants, from Independence Missouri, had earlier earned the Silver Star for San Juan Hill and served with the 140th Infantry in 1918.

Operators Agree To Delay Union Electric Strike In St Louis

AFL union postponed a strike against Union Electric three hours before the walkout that would cut power to St. Louis military posts and many Missouri and Illinois towns. Mediation efforts led by labor conciliators and War Undersecretary Patterson persuaded the union to extend talks to midnight Wednesday. The dispute centers on hourly wage demands from 90 cents to 1.37 for welders, with 670 workers at Cahokia Venice plant, Bagnell Dam and St Louis County Gas involved. Ephraim Martin, 39, died when a dump truck bed collapsed on him in Joplin.

Three American Eagle Squadron fliers missing

London reports three American Eagle Squadron pilots missing over German-occupied France after Sunday operations. The fliers are Eugene Tobin of Los Angeles HH. 5. Fenlow of Lewisville Texas and William Nichols of San Carlos California. An eagle squadron source notes heavy enemy opposition and swarms of Messerschmitts over France. Tobin is famed for a claimed early downing of a German plane over Britain.
