Postal rates set to rise in January 1974
Regular postage stamps will cost 10 cents and postal cards eight cents when temporary rates take effect January 5, 1974. Nashville country star Stringbean Akeman and wife slain
Police say the couple were killed in what is believed to be a burglary. Investigators found $5,700 on the pair, with $3,500 in Stringbean’s bib overalls and $2,200 on Mrs. Akeman. Fellow singer L. M. Jones discovered the bodies at their rural home after a burglary-ransacked three-room house. Stringbean, famed for his Hee Haw act and Grand Ole Opry appearances, was shot as he answered the door, while Mrs. Akeman was killed as she tried to flee.
