Liquor sellers call for price protection changes

Missouri House sub committee heard that liquor wholesalers need protection against price discrimination as two day hearings at the capitol continued. William Wright of the Missouri Wine and Spirits Association cited higher case prices for Missouri wholesalers and urged a price affirmation law to curb distortions while noting wholesale pricing varies nationwide. Merlin Burke of the association noted contracts can be terminated only with cause, a change from current practice.

ERA Workshop Friday Featuring Dr Marguerite Rawalt

Washington attorney Dr Marguerite Rawalt will headline an Equal Rights Amendment workshop at the Christian Church Conference Center Friday at 6 30 p m. The former national president of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women and 1945 Baylor honorary doctor of law recipient has served on the President's Commission on the Status of Women and the Federal Bar Association committee. She teaches a graduate course at George Washington University titled Women and the Law.

Driving proposal opposed in Missouri legislature

Two Missouri lawmakers opposed a plan to curb drunken driving while Atty Gen. Danforth backed it as the nations toughest law. The bill would revoke licenses after arrest if signs of intoxication are seen and the driver refuses a Breathalyzer, with seven days before a civil hearing and rights of appeal to circuit court. Fred Williams called the proposal asinine and unconstitutional in a letter.

Police suspend accused officer in Bridgeton case

Bridgeton police sergeant Michael McCarthy was suspended after testimony from four Bridgeton officers was refuted by a prosecution witness. Anthony W. Marquitz was acquitted on charges stemming from an alleged December incident in which Crook claimed officers used force and sprayed him. Prosecuting Atty. Gene McNary will review possible perjury and tampering with a witness.

Auto accident claims 3 lives in Dunklin and New Madrid counties

Missouri traffic crashes killed four people on Wednesday. Allan Gattis 22 Teresa Gattis 20 and Jonathan Crum 2 of Bragg City died when their car hit a pickup on Route 7 two miles west of Kennett. The pickup driver Billy Inman 19 survived and the Gattis baby David 1 was injured. Steve Walker 20 of Portageville died when his car left Highway 61 near Portageville and struck a bridge abutment. His body went to a Portageville funeral home.

Missouri firm pleads no defense in copyright case

A Missouri firm, P.M. Place Stores Co. of Bethany, pled no defense in Des Moines federal court to 18 counts of copyright infringement and was fined 1900 dollars. The 44 count indictment alleged sale of copied pop rock and country music tapes in 12 Iowa towns. Remaining 26 counts pending. U.S. Atty. Allen Danielson said the plea covered tapes sold in Boone Fairfield Des Moines Bloomfield Fort Madison Jefferson Greenfield Corning and Creston. More charges against other sellers expected.
