George Crawford once famed as a major bootlegger in southern Illinois died at 52 in a county hospital, penniless and a charity patient. His burial was funded by local business leaders after his former wife and ex governor Gulom aided efforts to avoid a pauper’s grave.
Stocks rose at the opening on brisk demand then retreated as investors sold support shares after yesterday's rally and a large drop in Federal Reserve loans. U S Steel led gains briefly then fluctuated while Union Pacific fell sharply. several leaders retreated 1 to 5 points.
In St Joseph Missouri a man named William Hahn was found dead south of the city. His son in law George Bertrand of Clyde Kansas urged an autopsy to determine if Hahn could shoot himself twice in the right temple. Coroner Tadlock had previously ruled the death a suicide. Hahn reportedly carried $506 when leaving Everest for St Joseph. No money was found on the body.
Senator George W. Norris of Nebraska was injured after being struck by a car driven by Milton G. Wood in Washington. He received abrasions to his left leg and a sprained wrist. Wood was arrested for reckless driving and released on bond. Mrs. Amanda B. Hargis, Missouri labor commissioner, will speak on blindness prevention in St Louis Monday at the Chase Hotel.
Clyde Thompson, 47, labeled a thrill slayer, was again sentenced to death for the September 7 killings of Lucian Shook and Leon Shook near Leray Texas. A jury earlier sentenced him to death in 1928 but granted a new trial on appeal. Prosecutors said Thompson invited the victims hunting then killed them to see them kick. The trial featured testimony from Woodrow Davis and his brother Thomas Davis and included a dispute over Thompson’s birth year.
Franklin county court of appeals heard Dr James H Snook appeal from a murder conviction as he awaits execution November 29 for the hammer killing of Miss Theora K Hix Proceedings included claims that Snook was denied counsel during an 18 hour interrogation and that a midnight interview with newsmen tainted the trial Counsel for Rick etts argued the defendant lacked proper defense preparation and that the court erred in denying a new trial influencing public opinion
A four state meeting in Joplin Missouri on November 22 will discuss taxation of Kansas and Missouri motorcars by Oklahoma and Arkansas. Attending will be Missouri secretary of state Charles A Becker Kansas secretary E A Cornell and Victor King Oklahoma Ed McDonald Arkansas Claude Duty and E N Plank. Janes A Collison of the Joplin Chamber arranged the meeting.
Mrs. H J Waliau returns from Wewoka Oklahoma and various visitors travel through the city including Mrs Howard C Boone and Roy Monier. Birth of a baby girl announced, officials attend meetings in Joplin and St Louis. Lincoln University High vs Lincoln High Springfield game set November 9. Mrs. Isabel T. Kerrigan testifies in Brooklyn supreme court that her prohibition agent husband earns $2,500 a year and supports a town and country house two autos and a speed boat. She seeks alimony of $35 weekly while divorce suit proceeds, arguing his income and assets exceed claimed scarcity. He says he has no funds and relies on his father.
William Bullock a former express company employee was shot and killed as he and his brother Eugene 17 fled an old ramshackle house. Frank Toran 63 a recluse crouched inside with a Civil War rifle after allegedly ordering them out. Toran held awaiting jail.
Missouri editors assemble in Kansas City for the Missouri Press Association convention. Notable speakers include Carl Magee Herman Roe and Lt Governor Winter. Dean Walter Williams of the Missouri School of Journalism will headline. Events span meals dinners and chamber tours with officers to be elected Saturday.
