The extended outlook from Sunday through Tuesday shows a chance of showers on Monday and continued cold. Lows range from the upper 20s to 30s, with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s north and upper 40s to lower 50s in the Bootheel region.

The Missouri Baptist Convention at its annual assembly elected women to its executive committee for the first time and named a new reorganization plan. The event followed controversy over Dr. Earl Harding and an audit finding $53,000 misaccounted. The 13 member committee will be chosen by secret ballot among 51 board members.
Missouri Auditor John D. Ashcroft will address the Cole County Republican Women’s Club in Jefferson City at the Missouri Electric Cooperative at 2 p.m. Monday. The talk, titled Good Government is Good Politics, will stress audits and citizenry. A Q and A will follow. admission is free. Barbed wire, invented in 1874 by American Joseph F. Glidden.
Gov. Christopher S. Bond will speak at the 18th annual Freedom Dinner hosted by the Jefferson City NAACP chapter at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Ramada Inn. He will be the first Missouri governor to address the local NAACP on its 50th anniversary. A long-time member, Charles E. Robinson, 502 Lafayette St., will be honored with a lifetime membership pin, certificate, and plaque for his service. Robinson, 83, has served the organization.
Dr William Busby of Jefferson City spoke to the Small Fry Nursery School at Wesley Methodist Church on child physical and emotional issues. Officers elected include Mrs Gary Sonnenberg secretary Mrs Jim Strate vice president and Mrs Ray Sluyter creative projects. The next meeting will be the first Monday in February with Dr William A Ross as local chapter president to recognize guests and Mayor John G Christy as toastmaster.
Joseph D. McNamara, 38, a NYPD veteran, was sworn as Kansas City's new police chief in a public ceremony at City Hall plaza. About 700 attended, including 250 uniformed officers. He succeeds Clarence M. Kelley, now FBI director, and pledged high standards, collaboration with the criminal justice system, and firm but lawful action against crime.
Counties named for aid include Cole Callaway Moniteau Franklin and Cooper among 36 along the Missouri River designated flood disaster areas by the Federal Disaster Assistance Administration. One stop centers will open Monday at Platte City Pattonsburg and Fortescue with mobile teams to aid victims.
Deputy county clerk Mrs. Jane Sanders cites about 22000 potential voters for the Cole County regional sewer district election. She notes around 4000 registered for the first time since Sept 15. Voters head to polls Tuesday to decide the measure. Books closed Oct 10.
The MPIRG Foundation released a study in St. Louis stating Missouri workers receive only 75 percent of their wage under workers compensation, leaving a family of four $660 below the poverty line. The report calls benefits inadequate, noting maximums lag behind Social Security and state wages, and criticizes insurers' profits in the system.
State Insurance Supt Edward Farmer charged the University of Missouri with poor bidding practices for four campuses and a $833,000 annual premium. He cited a House committee inquiry. MU officials defend the long term broker arrangement as cost saving. The current broker is Youngbert-Carlson Co. of Chicago.
Two Jefferson City youths Mark Gregory Fooks, 18, and James L. Wishon, 17, were fined $50 and sentenced to seven days in jail for contributing to the delinquency of a minor girl. They were charged with providing intoxicating beverages to a minor, allegedly giving her homemade wine and a can of beer.
