Washington May 3 The Treasury Department opened an inquiry into reports of customs agents in New York conducting personal searches aboard steamers for liquor possession. Secretary Lowman opposed revived searches, signaling potential limits on intrusive tactics while noting possible liner related activity requiring caution to enforce prohibition.
New York May 3 AP Reuters: The stock market tumbled amid weakened marginal accounts and pool liquidations. total two hour sales surpassed 4 million shares, the most furious pace since November, with broad declines across Dow components and utilities as the market closed near session lows.
Kansas City May 3 AP The toll from a series of tornadoes sweeping Kansas and Missouri Thursday night rose to eight with the death of Paul Weiss 12 of Norborne Mo in a hospital. His home was destroyed by the winds. Red Cross workers and local officials continued relief efforts with no outside aid required. Property damage near Norborne estimated at 100000. Six persons were killed there.

Norris acerbely questions Parker's judicial independence in the Red Jacket case. Funeral services for Miss Bessie Burnham set for Liberty Church near Ashland Sunday.
Dr. Max F. Meyer head of Missouri University psychology must appear before the University Board of Curators in Columbia on May 16 for a formal hearing. He is accused of remarks at a Nashville meeting criticizing his suspension over the sex questionnaire affair. The board may impose dismissal, suspension, reprimand, or censure based on the outcome.
