The body passes an 8.45 million budget with pay boosts for guards and expanded mental hospital funding, amid debate on merit system implications.
The Kansas Highways Committee votes 11 to 7 against recommending a bill to repeal the zone mile tax and raise license fees to offset Missouri’s reci pro city use. Missouri warns Kansas truckers must secure a Missouri license after April 5 to operate on Missouri roads. Kansas sought talks with Missouri’s Highway Patrol superintendent to resolve the issue.
A handful of strong stocks aided a late market lift while many fell, with gains of 1 to 8 points for leaders and losses of 1 to 2 points in others. About 2.4 million shares traded, down from 2.54 million the day before in a declining market.
MILAN Mo The Sullivan County grand jury recessed yesterday until April 14 without returning any indictments on alleged voting irregularities and ballot thefts. The term expires May 1. The county’s 32 precinct books and 767 absentee ballots were stolen from the courthouse Dec 27 after irregularities in the November election were noted. Robert R Welborn said the case shows a bipartisan mess and isn’t confined to one party. Clare Magee resigned as special prosecutor, claiming votes were bought and absentee certificates falsified. Welborn will confer with Sgt Walter Snyder about further presentations to the grand jury. Snyder has investigated the ballot theft.
A St Louis delegation prepares to oppose a measure to extend school bus transportation to private and parochial students along with public schools. An anticipated large turnout is expected tonight before a House committee, with an estimated 500 attendees from St Louis and county churches and Protestant groups including P.O.A.U.S. for church state separation.
In a historic double feature at the Nevada proving ground two atomic tests were staged. A 500 foot tower explosion occurred before dawn and an air drop detonation occurred high above 15000 feet in midmorning. The tests, first ever to occur on the same day by the Atomic Energy Commission, mirrored a spring series shot from March 7 and February 18 respectively, with the air drop device released from a high flying plane over Yucca Flat.
Secretary of State Dulles told a Senate committee parley with allies appears months off. He urged steady consent to wartime rearmament plans while noting ongoing military and diplomatic efforts amid a tense security climate.
Morgan M. dor reports to The Post- Tribune that a bill removing restrictions on acreage allotments has passed both houses and moves to the President's desk. Supporters say it will aid farmers in drought conditions by allowing grain investment in allotments with soil conservation urged by Meukler. Senator Moulder notes the Senate companion mirrors his House bill, relaxing old Section 348 Subile Law 610 limits on feeding in excess of allotments.
Cordell Hull, 81, former secretary of state, remains in critical condition after a stroke at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Doctors reported a restful night, consciousness, and the ability to take nourishment by mouth, but the outlook remains guarded as updates continue.
The Senate Armed Services Committee approved a bill to raise pay for career military personnel with minor changes since House passage. About 1.7 million of the 3 million on duty would receive boosts, with raises from 6 to 25 percent and an average 13.9 percent for enlisted members.
Ocean City Maryland searchers recovered five bodies from a 14 foot motor boat that disappeared near Sinepuxent Bay. The victims include Mitchell Clagg, his wife Dorothy, their children Judson and Chanel, and Roberta Pollard. A sixth person, believed to be Mrs Roland's husband William, remained missing. The fishing party came from Baltimore and was returning from a lodg e at High Wind 12 miles south of Ocean City when the tragedy occurred.
