Interstate Highways Promote Peacetime Travel Boom
Washington reports the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways will total about 41,000 miles with 21,500 open. The AAA says 100 million Americans will take summer motor vacations, driving 155 billion miles and spending $25 billion. The system aims for faster, safer travel with limited access segments and long, easy curves, though toll roads exist on 2,000 miles.

Shift of Draft Emphasis To Younger Men Advocated
Washington AP reports a Defense Department study urges redesigning the draft to induct the youngest eligible men first, focusing on ages 19 to 20 as combat commanders prefer younger troops and about eight in ten volunteers are under 20. The study notes no quick move to an all volunteer force and cites high costs to attract volunteers, with 3 million in service now and Korea-era force levels guiding needs. The present deferment system is deemed basically sound.
