Mattern to head Jefferson City United Way division

John W. Mattern Jr of Chesebrough Ponds is named chairman of the Public Service Division for the 1977 Jefferson City Area United Way campaign. He will solicit support from school employees Lincoln University and local hospitals. The fall drive begins Sept 27 aiming at 240,985 dollars for 19 services and agencies.

Maury County Jail lacked sprinklers and smoke alarms due to no state requirement, while seven keys needed to free 56 inmates delayed rescue as cyanide and carbon monoxide fumes spread. Food prices rise across beef pork and eggs in Missouri survey

The Missouri Farm Bureau reports higher prices for beef and pork cuts and eggs in its weekly price survey across 50 stores. Round steak up 7 cents to 1.54, sirloin 6 to 1.89, T-bone 5 to 2.16, rib steak drops, pork prices mostly higher with ground pork steady, eggs per dozen up to 69 cents for large, 58 cents for medium, and milk and bread showing small increases while other items vary in small amounts.

A 24-year-old Centertown man is jailed in Cole County after a Wal-Mart Discount City employee reported him carrying four new black and white televisions out of the store onto Missouri Boulevard. The items, valued at 55 dollars, were confiscated by police.

Elevator fall kills woman in St Joseph building

A 71 year old St Joseph woman, Bunny Tracie, died after falling about 20 feet into an elevator shaft in the Kirkpatrick Building on Monday. Bystander Harold Couch of Kansas City rushed to warn her but she did not hear him and slipped from his grasp as the car was not on the first floor. She died at St Joseph Hospital from multiple injuries.
