Second Mutiny Ends Abruptly In Kentucky Pen
ED DYVILLE Ky AP The second mutiny within 24 hours broke out at the state prison today but guards restored order within a half hour. Warden Jess Buchanan reported no injuries, contrasting yesterday’s uprising when eight prisoners were wounded and a guard hurt. About 39 young prisoners raided the commissary as guards with submachine guns forced them back to their cells. State police were recalled and kept at the pen for days. None of yesterday’s 300 participants aided today. Luther Coheen said things quieted and operations should run smoothly. Altogether 300 defiant prisoners, advised by a chaplain, surrendered unconditionally at 7:15 pm after threats to call the National Guard if needed.
