Bulky Letter May Be Clue In Murder Case At Crane

A bulky registered letter missing from Bastum Ingram’s personal effects looms as a key clue in the murder hunt. Ingram, a Missouri Pacific foreman, received the registered letter at Crane post office Monday and read it there, appearing worried. The sender and origin are unknown, not from Yellville, Arkansas, per Postmaster J. W. Brown. Sheriff Willingham returns to Yellville after a jail-breaching escape leads to renewed searches for two fugitives.

Local Man Ingram Slain. Jail Break Ties Probed

Officials say tensions with Gargous and Riley, who fled jail, point to a rival group. Ingram's home burned shortly after the jail break amid reports of a mixed drinking party the night he was killed. Dr Doggett reports a white hot metal wound and the coroner's jury returns death by causes unknown. Seven railroad gang members formerly under Ingram's supervision were arrested for investigation.
