New Zealand Navy joins U S in polar rescue mission
A dramatic Antarctic rescue effort involved two New Zealand frigates Otago and Pukaki joining two U S ski equipped planes from Hickam Air Force Base to save Bethel McCullen a 39 year old builder first class with a broken back and paralysis stranded at McMurdo Station. The operation directed by Adm. James H. Reedy faced extreme winds darkness and the need for precise ice landings and major surgery equipment from Bethesda Hospital.
