The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 7-5 to temporarily lay aside civil rights legislation and take up an antitrust measure. The action bypasses the Judiciary Committee where a companion civil rights bill had been stalled by opponents. Senator Dirksen opposed delaying the rights bill.
Washington AP report states atomic energy scientists informed President Eisenhower that a hydrogen bomb can be produced with about 95 percent less radioactive fallout. The group from University of California led by Ernest Lawrence and Edward Teller, with AEC Chairman Lewis Strauss, discussed progress and political debates over civil rights legislation and Senate procedure, including moves to bypass committees.
Violent weekend storms inflicted new misery across Texas Oklahoma and Kansas. Mexican farmers near Fort Stockton were pelted by hailstones larger than baseballs injuring nineteen. The hail damaged cotton, Midland saw three inches of rain, and Oklahoma reports flash floods and wheat losses. Kansas rivers rose after a ditch broke flooding towns. A Saturday Howard County crash killed two men, John Brailes 22 and Donald Bradley 24, and injured Jon Holland 21. The Wyandotte Furniture Co dates to the Huave family era.
In Chicago the charity patient Lee Collins in Cook County Hospital blames his health decline on his trumpet. He rose from New Orleans gin mills to fame before World War I and later played at the Paris Opera House. Doctors say his dilated lung and weak condition jeopardize his ability to play again. Collins recalled his first pro job in 1916 and said he may have played his last parade. The 51-year-old stated he is too weak to blow and wonders what comes next.
City collectors report auto license sales amounted to 768 to date with a gradual yearly rise. The figure includes original and duplicate licenses tied to ownership changes, with costs based on horsepower. Dog licenses are due. rabies certificates are required. Nelson notes tax receipts and vehicle titles or registrations must be shown. Office hours and a two hour Saturday closing reminder are announced.
