State health officials vow strict enforcement this fall of the measles vaccination law for schoolchildren. James Donoho, director of the Bureau of Immunizable Diseases, expects initial removals in late October and notes more than one million letters have been sent to schools.
Ugandan refugees report killings by Idi Amin’s security forces in retaliation for a life plot. Refugees describe looting and assaults near Entebbe and across border towns, with civilians killed and families displaced. A UNHCR spokesman says reports of a refugee surge are inaccurate. An American reporter quoted Amin saying he is fine and amused by the fuss.
A 22 member group from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley paddled from Sioux City to St. Louis as part of a one month, 10 credit study. Led by Bernie Kendall and James Barrington, they conduct water analyses, wildlife and social studies, with ages from 20 to over 50 and a planned stay at Dodge Park in Omaha.
Missouri environmental officials say at least four industrial firms and possibly one municipality may face enforcement action for failing to meet the July 1 deadline to curb water pollution. Actions could include new clean up schedules or fines up to 10000 per day. only NL Industries has been fined so far.
James Peter Pardue formerly of Connecticut awaits sentencing after a Denver federal jury convicted him of attempting to rob First Westland National Bank in 1976. Sentencing is postponed for a probation report. Pardue and George Chatfield, both Aurora residents, face up to 25 years. Chatfield to be tried separately. No injuries occurred. Pardue and his brother had prior criminal history including a 1970 Danbury bank robbery.
Former Public Service Commissioner Charles J. Fain has joined Washington Missouri based Phillip Transit Lines to oppose Beaufort Transfer Co request for permanent expanded operating authority before the PSC. Fain left the commission May 22 and says his private practice work does not violate state conflict of interest law. He notes he did not participate in the case while on the five member body.
Mayes County District Attorney Sid Wise said a first degree murder warrant will be prepared for escaped rapist Gene LeRoy Hart in the Camp Scott murders near Locust Grove Oklahoma. Sheriff Pete Weaver will sign the warrant with OSBI concurrence. Three Girl Scouts ages 9 to 10 were slain on June 13. two beaten, one strangled, all molested. Hart previously escaped from Mayes County jail in Pryor in 1973 and has long sentences for rape kidnapping and burglary. Authorities urge residents not to pick up hitchhikers as they search Camp Scott with hundreds of volunteers. women are barred from the hunt due to lack of portable toilets.
