DDS shows promise in cut malaria cases for troops in Viet Nam
A spokesman for the surgeon general says the drug diamino diphenylsulfone DDS halved malaria cases among soldiers in Viet Nam tests. Treated troops with breakthrough infections may return to duty in two to three weeks, not six to eight. Recurrent risk drops from 41 to 4 percent. Last year 1,801 U.S. troops had malaria with 63,085 man days lost. DDS targets falciparum, severe malaria found in the Vietnamese highlands. Walter Reed Army Institute of Research led the testing.
