Tests of New Bill and NAACP Toward Moderation

Roy Wilkins of the NAACP urged moderation in testing compliance with the civil rights bill as the NAACP convention in Washington opened with about 2,000 delegates. He warned of rival tactics between King of the SCLC and James Farmer of CORE and urged smart, militant action rather than loud rhetoric. He defended the bill as the strongest civil rights measure and signaled increased political activity to back pro civil rights candidates, noting Republican Senate support despite Goldwater’s opposition. In St Augustine, four Negroes and a white integrationist were jailed after being barred from a Methodist Church, while an Episcopal rector admitted five Negroes inside after overruling vestrymen.

Debate on medical practice and socialized medicine

The text argues against socialized medicine, advocating for private practice and personal enterprise.
