Ministers urged June 29 as spiritual mobilization day
Missouri church leaders were asked to stress citizenship responsibility and voting during a June 29 service under the theme Freedom Under God. Governor Forrest Smith declared the week as Freedom Week and urged church bells to ring ten minutes at noon and again on July Fourth to thank God for liberty. The Missouri Chamber of Commerce Farm Bureau and Associated Industries noted only 24 percent of adults voted in the 1950 primaries, warning that citizens risk losing franchise by default. In ancient times women sometimes fought as gladiators in arenas.
