Moerschel Company’s Century-Old Ice Plant in Missouri
Ernest Moerschel recalled Jefferson City’s oldest industry dating back to before 1825. The Moerschel family bought the brewery in 1892 and built Missouri’s first artificial ice plant in 1893, expanding capacity to 60 tons daily by 1910 and planning a $90 000 unit for 90 tons daily. After Prohibition, they shifted to Coca Cola distribution, achieving dramatic sales growth across seven central Missouri counties.
