Detroit June 17 An AP report states sword swallower Anthony Mareno had a sore throat today after substituting a neon tube for his sword during a sideshow at Eastwood park. The tube broke and he was taken to Saratoga General Hospital for throat cuts.
Berlin report by Gen. Lucius D. Clay says German youth have not absorbed democratic principles since V E Day. He cites lack of capable German leadership as a main barrier to building sound youth organizations and urges reoriented youth movements, reform of schools, better conditions, and more outside contact. 2,299,507 youths ages 11 to 18 in American zone. 890,416 in youth groups. 40 percent in religious groups, 31 percent in sports. rest in handicraft and other groups.
In Garden City Kansas the 9 June heat near 100 degrees damaged southwest Kansas wheat. Superintendent L M Sloan reported some wheat turned white and appeared dead while the full extent remained undetermined. Elsewhere American and British taxpayers paid about 180 million dollars to ship 1 482 000 metric tons of food into Germany's zones in the first five months of the year.
A draft Henry Wallace for president movement forms in California with a Fresno July 19 meeting to name a pro Wallac e California delegation for the next Democratic national convention. Wallace urged Truman to invite Stalin to Berlin to discuss trade and peace. Thomas F. Maxwell, assistant city manager of Kansas City Missouri, appointed to the University City post with an $8 000 a year salary. He was the unanimous choice of the seven member city council and will take office July 1 after 60 applicants competed.

Washington June 17 AP retail prices for essential items eased slightly between mid April and mid May according to preliminary BLS estimates. The May 15 CPI is about 156 with 1935 39 as 100, showing goods up over 18 percent from a year prior and 48 percent above August 1939 levels.
