Washington June 15 AP Congress approved compromise wage hour bill after senate debate. The act aims to fix minimum pay and maximum hours for 750000 industrial workers and hours for another 100000, to take effect 120 days after signature. President Roosevelt’s signature would establish an administrator with broad powers to implement the program.
Missouri Democrats Anderson Bell Cannon Cochran Duncan Hennings Nelson Romine Shannon Williams Wood Zimmerman voted for the conference report on the wage hour bill. Republicans opposed. The act sets a 25 cent minimum rising to 40 cents with a 44 hour week initially and overtime pay. Exemptions include executives sales staff and some agricultural and small-press workers. An appropriation of 500000 funds the administration of the law as committees establish wage floors for interstate industries.
Two coal miners, Peter Shinkowsky and his son Peter Jr., were rescued after 45 hours trapped 300 feet underground in Ashland. They walked out unaided and were taken to Ashland State Hospital. A collapse caused by a mine buggy loosening shaft timbering triggered the incident. rescue crews reached them with a shaft borrowed by Dr. R L Duffy.
A Chicago psychologist advises June graduates to take any available job and keep it until better openings appear. Dr. Robert XN McNurry warns morale declines if graduates refuse lower level work, stressing steady earnings and experience outweigh long unemployment.
In St Louis on June 15 AP reports excess rainfall across east central and southeast Missouri disrupted farming with 4 inches in spots, delaying corn planting which nears completion. statewide weekly rainfall averaged 1.42 inches against 1.04 normal,April through June totals near 12.80 inches. Oats are generally good, alfalfa harvest hampered, tomatoes ripening while weeds rise in wet fields.
In Aurora Missouri on June 15 an NLRB hearing into union charges against Majestic Flour Mills was recessed when attorney Joan Madden of the company fell ill with appendicitis. Trial examiner Peter Ward said the case would be postponed indefinitely if surgery is required. Madden had begun calling witnesses, including Claude Reid the Aurora postmaster and former board member, who testified the firm offered reinstatement at higher wages and shorter hours while union leaders refused to return without a signed contract. Fifty eight former workers allege they were fired for union activity.
Testimony from James Bailey Cash Sr. detailed the kidnapping of his son, the ransom payment of 10000 dollars, and the discovery of notes and the boy’s pajamas. Prosecutor Worley established timelines from the night of the abduction to the discovery of the victim’s death, while defense counsel declined to object to the introduced evidence.
Morberly, Mo. June 15 AP Albert Phillips of Cleveland general secretary treasurer of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen defended seniority rights as a principle the union has fought for. He did not mention the word seniority in a talk opening the state convention and asked corrections to a report that he proposed abolishing seniority.
Reports say 200000 Chinese civilians made homeless and 130000 displaced as floods trap farming communities and halt the Sunghai railway. Refugees struggle on rooftops and raft construction rises to save those stranded while Japanese troops avoid the flood’s main course. Japanese spokesmen warn civilian lives exceed what bombing could risk.
All but one of Missouri's 18 circuit judges with expiring terms seek re election. John M Cleary the sole exception after Gov Stark named him to replace the late Bird a move vetoed by Kansas City boss T J Pendergast. Buzzard won party endorsement for the post. The rest aim to hold six year terms with races across Kansas City St Louis and outstate circuits.
The centennial convention of the Lutheran synod of Missouri Ohio and other states opens in St Louis with 5000 delegates. Education in Lutheran seminaries and colleges is a principal topic. Karl Kretzschmer delivers the opening address. E J Gallmeyer re elected president of the laymen s league with officers named E J Echtenkamp Austin Prodoehl Wendland Hennig Herzer among new vice presidents. Next convention set for Valparaiso University.

Rebels launch a surprise offensive in southern Spain imperiling the government on two fronts. Franco forces advanced toward Valencia while an insurgent army moved on the Cordoba front. Air raids hit Nules and Valencia harbor, with casualties and a sunk French freighter Gaulois. Barcelona endured two hours of bombing and air raid alarms as insurgents attacked.
Upton Sinclair, once a New Deal supporter, abandons inadequate designs and joins the Progressive Party led by the La Follettes in Pasadena California. He criticizes Roosevelt as failing to address ongoing suffering and lauds Robert and Phillip La Follette for a brave new party.
