Controversial License Tax Debate Draws Chamber Views
The Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce voices strong concerns over a proposed merchant license tax. Critics say it unfairly burdens small earners and wholesalers outside city limits, threatens relocations, and leaves itinerant traders untaxed. Real estate and financial leaders propose earnings taxes or broader reforms to deliver fair, citywide funding.
Dinner of City Tax Bill Sparks Merchants Debate
Jefferson City merchants and officials debated a proposed city license tax bill. Local business leaders argued for a revised bracketed system while opposing higher fees, citing ad valorem taxes and impact on wholesalers, retailers, bottlers, and hotels. The meeting drew representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and several trade groups as they pressed for alternatives and privacy protections in audits.
