Burger confirmed as nation's 15th chief justice

Washington AP reports the Senate overwhelmingly confirmed Warren E Burger as the nation's 15th chief justice. The vote followed a brief, orderly confirmation amid liberal opposition linked to the Fortas affair. Burger, a 14 year veteran of the federal bench, will fill the seat vacated by Earl Warren and move the court closer to full strength.

Three youths killed in crash near lake

A deadly night on Missouri roads left six dead. In Camdenton area a one car crash near Bagnell Dam killed three youths including driver David Dodson 18 of Camdenton and Bill Gene Bean 17 of St. Peters with Danny Cuvar 18 of Granite City injured. Ronald Wall of St. Louis hospitalized with injuries. A separate three car crash on US 50 near Gerald killed one and injured five, with Marvin Woods 28 Owensville and Angus Brannon 59 St. Louis listed critical. Other injuries included Thomas Luennenann 21 Crestwood and Gary Rehmer 29 Gerald. In Howard County two more fatalities occurred on Route 5 and Highway Five South near the Chariton line with Linus Meyer 62 Glasgow dying after a sideswipe collision.
