Illinois Senate Backs Tax Hike

The Illinois Senate approved a half cent rise in the state sales tax and bills to empower city governments to levy local taxes without a prior referendum. A 1847 statute would be amended, and a so called use tax on out of state purchases was also approved. The measures moved to the house.

Rise in US private wages and consumer spending

Private industry pays out eight billion dollars more in wages and salaries this year as Personal Income climbs to about 29 percent of all output. Wage scales rise sharply in key industries with hundreds of companies signing labor contracts. Ford’s unemployment benefit supplement calms merchants in auto trade centers. Consumer spending reaches a record 243 billion dollars, with optimism that it could rise to 231 billion next year.

Fire damages Peterson Planing Mill in St Louis

A four alarm blaze last night caused about 50000 damage to the Peterson Planing Mill Co on South St Louis. The fire broke through the roof of the two story building and forced nearby residents to flee. One firefighter was overcome by smoke. Flames confined to the rear portion by valorous efforts. The fire started from undetermined origin fed by sawdust and lumber inside. Twenty pieces of equipment responded to the alarm.

Graham ends five day Paris Crusade tonight

Evangelist Billy Graham wraps up a Paris Crusade that drew over 31 000 attendees with estimates near 40 000 for last night. About 467 people answered the call for Decisions for Christ as Graham urged belief in Christ and warned of eternal life versus judgment. A London office was announced to serve as Europe headquarters for Graham’s outreach.

Nationalist air force headquarters announced that a Nationalist Chinese patrol plane was shot down by Chinese air force fire off the Fukien coast. Four propeller Thunderbolts were hit near Swatow and crashed into the sea while attempting to reach Quemoy.
