This Week in the Garden answers common questions from gardeners. Cucumbers do not cross with muskmelons. seed pods on potato plants are rare and have little value. sweet potato blooms resemble morning glories. handle tomatoes with clean hands to avoid tobacco mosaic virus. tomato blooms drop from temperature, fertility, and soil conditions. protect cauliflower heads from light to keep color. use remaining greens before high heat spurs seed stalks.

Missouri develops soybean strain resistant to cyst nematode
In Columbia Missouri a yellow seeded soybean line resistant to the soybean cyst nematode has been developed by University of Missouri field crops staff led by Emmett Prwell. The strain, created by J Fy Williams and Arnold Matson, will be used in crosses with commercial soybeans and not released as a stand alone variety. Release to growers is expected in three years as nematode resistant lines replace current susceptible varieties. A federal state quarantine aims to curb the nematode with long crop rotations and restricted movement.

Atrazine and Lorex offer weed and grass control but Lorex risks corn injury and forage use limits. Sorghum tolerates 2 4 D similarly but cannot be sprayed post emergence for grasses. no effective grass control exists currently. Also notes 1961 railroad diesel, fuel oil, and electricity usage.
